The old adage of "A picture is worth a thousand words" is the simplistic charter of Picture Talk Books.
We have developed a series of patient care guides where the pictures and images are used to support the communication between your patients and your providers.
Our patient care guides were designed to be used as durable medical equipment, for individual patients use to avoid cross-contamination between multiple patients.
Upon patient discharge, the patient is encouraged to take the patient care guide home with them to be used with their care givers, and for subsequent office visits for future medical needs in communicating with their medical providers.
Health systems are introducing computer tablets for patient use. We support this strategy to increase the patient experience, but we have concerns about providing a non-sterile computer tablet that is shared by multiple patients. Cross contamination between patients can be very dangerous in the spread of bacteria and virus.
In an ever changing world, the ability to communicate has been streamlined with technology. However, technology can only take us so far, but the simple inability to communicate because of a language barrier, lack of available translators and patients suffering who are unable to speak due to stroke, head injuries or sickness.
Communication is essential within the healthcare setting. Patients need to convey their symptoms to medical staff. Patients who are unable to speak or converse due to language barriers, and the lack of an available translators, can identify "where it hurts" and "I need assistance" in their native language, with supporting images. Our patient care guides provide tabbed searches for identifying healthcare ailments in a speedy fashion. This will enable healthcare professionals to help these patients, and provide the appropriate care, in a timely fashion.
A complete set of (6) patient care guides, supporting all 30+ languages, can be purchased from our partner Amazon.
We recommend having 4 sets available in the Emergency Department or Patient in-take and as well providing (2) sets per floor of your facility to support your in-patients, to be stored at the nurse's station.
eBooks of the patient care guides are also available for use on any tablet or eReaders that supports the Amazon Kindle App.
